He Walked by Night (1948) follows a tense cat-and-mouse game through postwar Los Angeles, where a quiet loner named Roy Morgan — a brilliant electronics expert and remorseless thief — turns out to be a cop killer. As he slips through the shadows, using underground tunnels and police-radio tricks to stay one step ahead, detectives struggle to predict his next move. Inspired by real LAPD case files, the film blends procedural detail with stark, noir atmosphere — all underpinned by voiceover narration and low-key lighting that set the tone for a generation of crime dramas. With taut direction and an unforgettable performance by Richard Basehart, it’s a slow-burning portrait of paranoia, alienation, and the thin line between order and chaos.
Director: Alfred L. Werker (with uncredited direction by Anthony Mann)
